Game History

+

Original Creation: Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots is a two-player action toy designed by Marvin Glass and Associates and was first manufactured by the Marx toy company in 1964. It features two duelling robot boxers, Red Rocker and Blue Bomber.

Design Inspiration: The game was developed after being inspired by boxing games that appeared in arcades in the early 1960s, using mannequins made of metal that would fall over if a player managed to hit the button on the chin.

Robot Transformation: After the death of boxer Davey Moore in 1963, designer Burt Meyer suggested they "de-humanise" the characters, making them robots that fall apart, rather than humanoid figures that fall over.

Space Age Backstory: Text on the original box suggested an outer-space backstory. The red boxer is "the rollicking Red Rocker" from Soltarus II. The blue opponent is the "beautiful Blue Bomber, pride of Umgluck."

Lasting Success: The toy has enjoyed far-ranging success in the United States, selling in the hundreds of thousands and becoming a minor popular culture phenomenon that continues today.

Strategy Tips

+

Master the Controls: Take some time to practice with your robot before challenging an opponent. Understanding the timing and angle of each button press is crucial for landing effective punches.

Watch Your Opponent: Pay attention to your opponent's patterns and try to anticipate their moves. If they tend to favour one side, prepare to block or counter-punch.

Mix Up Your Attacks: Don't be predictable! Alternate between left, right, and straight punches to keep your opponent guessing.

Target the Sweet Spot: The chin button is the key to victory! Aim your punches slightly upward to hit this vulnerable spot and knock your opponent's block off.

Speed vs. Power: Fast, rapid punches can overwhelm your opponent, but well-timed, powerful strikes may be more likely to hit the target. Experiment with both approaches!

Pop Culture Impact

+

Film Appearances: The toy has been featured in movies like Toy Story 2, where Buzz Lightyear faced off against another Buzz in a parody of the game. The concept also inspired the 2011 movie "Real Steel" starring Hugh Jackman.

Commercial Success: The distinctive sound of a robot's head popping up and the phrase "knocked his block off!" became iconic in advertising and popular culture.

Lasting Appeal: Despite being over 50 years old, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots continues to sell well and has been reintroduced to new generations multiple times, proving its enduring appeal.

Collectible Status: Vintage versions of the game from the 1960s and 1970s have become sought-after collectibles, with original boxed sets commanding premium prices among toy collectors.

Modern Updates: The concept has been adapted into various formats, including electronic versions, miniature keychain games, and themed variants featuring popular characters.
