Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed "The Greatest," he is widely regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the 20th century and is frequently ranked as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.

Ali began his professional career in 1960 shortly after winning a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics. At age 22, he won the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston in a major upset on February 25, 1964. In 1966, Ali refused to be drafted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to the Vietnam War. He was arrested, found guilty of draft evasion, and stripped of his boxing titles. He appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which overturned his conviction in 1971.

Ali became known for his fighting style, which he described as "floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee." He also became famous for his pre-fight taunts and poems, prediction of which round he would win, and controversial statements about boxing, religion, race, and politics.

After retiring from boxing in 1981, Ali focused on religion and charity work. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's syndrome in 1984, attributed to boxing-related brain injuries. Despite his declining health, he remained active in public life and humanitarian efforts until his death in 2016.

Ali's legacy extends far beyond boxing. He became a global icon for his athletic achievements, social activism, and personal courage. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named him "Sportsman of the Century," and the BBC named him "Sports Personality of the Century."

Despite the changes of detail that occurred over the years, the Little Golden Books maintains a distinctive appearance. A copy of The Poky Little Puppy bought today is essentially the same as one printed in 1942. Both are readily recognizable as Little Golden Books. At the time of the series' golden anniversary in 1992, Golden Books claimed that a billion and a half Little Golden Books had been sold.
