Action Man was launched by Palitoy in the UK in 1966, copying upon the success of 'GI Joe' in the USA introduced in 1964. GI Joe was a bold gamble for US owners and producers Hassenfield Brothers, as he represented the first 'doll' for boys, and was more accurately described as an 'Action Figure' and 'Moveable Fighting Man'.

Action Man featured a robust, articulated plastic body, strung with elastic, and had one of four painted hair colours.

For the first few years the Action Man range was near identical to his GI Joe cousin. Slowly but surely Palitoy steered Action Man's course to one of a more British character and key innovations were added by Palitoy which included many new accessories and vehicles.

The character has gone through several generations and revivals, continuing to be a popular action figure brand in the UK and around the world.
