Batman TV Series
Batman is an American live action television series that aired on ABC from January 12, 1966, to March 14, 1968. The show, starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, was notable for its camp style, upbeat theme music, and its intentionally humorous, simplistic morality.
The series was known for its iconic comic book-inspired graphics during fight scenes, characterised by comic-book style sound effects like "POW!" and "BAM!" that were superimposed over the action.
The series featured many colourful and eccentric villains from Batman's rogues gallery, including the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman, who would devise elaborate schemes to take over Gotham City, only to be foiled by the Dynamic Duo.
Despite running for only three seasons, the Batman TV series had a lasting cultural impact and contributed significantly to the popularisation of the Batman character beyond comic books, influencing numerous future adaptations of the DC Comics superhero.
The Riddler Character
The Riddler was portrayed by Frank Gorshin (and occasionally by John Astin) in the 1960s Batman TV series. Gorshin's manic, energetic portrayal of the character earned him an Emmy nomination and cemented the Riddler as one of Batman's most iconic adversaries.
Characterised by his bright green suit adorned with question marks, his signature bowler hat, and his purple mask, the Riddler was known for his compulsion to leave intricate puzzles and riddles as clues to his crimes. This psychological quirk meant he couldn't commit a crime without giving Batman some chance, however slim, of solving the mystery.
In the show, the Riddler's intellect made him one of Batman's most challenging foes, often creating elaborate death traps and complex puzzles that required all of the Caped Crusader's detective skills to solve. His maniacal laugh and unpredictable behaviour made him particularly dangerous.
Frank Gorshin's interpretation of the character greatly influenced how the Riddler would be portrayed in subsequent Batman media, from comics to animated series to video games, establishing the character as one of the most enduring members of Batman's rogues gallery.
