Batman TV Series
Batman is an American live action television series that aired on ABC from January 12, 1966, to March 14, 1968. The show, starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, was notable for its camp style, upbeat theme music, and its intentionally humorous, simplistic morality.
The series was known for its iconic comic book-inspired graphics during fight scenes, characterised by comic-book style sound effects like "POW!" and "BAM!" that were superimposed over the action.
This Monochrome Joker variant pays homage to the fact that many viewers first experienced the Batman TV series in black and white, as colour television sets were not yet common in many households during the show's original run. The black and white aesthetic captures the nostalgic feel of early television broadcasts.
Despite running for only three seasons, the Batman TV series had a lasting cultural impact and contributed significantly to the popularisation of the Batman character beyond comic books, influencing numerous future adaptations of the DC Comics superhero.
The Joker Character
The Joker was portrayed by Cesar Romero in the 1966 Batman TV series as one of Batman's most flamboyant and recurring adversaries. Romero famously refused to shave his moustache for the role, resulting in the white face makeup being applied over it (which is sometimes visible in closeups).
The TV series version of The Joker was characterised by his wild, maniacal laugh, elaborate schemes, and colourful attire. Unlike darker iterations of the character in later years, the 1960s Joker was more of a mischievous prankster than a psychotic criminal, though his plans often involved theft or kidnapping.
This monochromatic version of The Joker figure is unique as it presents the character as he would have appeared to viewers watching on black and white television sets, which were still common in the mid-1960s. The black and white aesthetic creates a striking visual representation that harkens back to the show's original broadcast era.
Cesar Romero's portrayal of The Joker, with his distinctive laugh and theatrical performance, remains one of the most recognisable and beloved versions of the character, representing a lighter, more campy interpretation of Batman's greatest nemesis.
