Batman TV Series
Batman is an American live action television series that aired on ABC from January 12, 1966, to March 14, 1968. The show, starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin, was notable for its camp style, upbeat theme music, and its intentionally humorous, simplistic morality.
The series was known for its iconic comic book-inspired graphics during fight scenes, characterised by comic-book style sound effects like "POW!" and "BAM!" that were superimposed over the action.
The series featured many colourful and eccentric villains from Batman's rogues gallery, including the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman, who would devise elaborate schemes to take over Gotham City, only to be foiled by the Dynamic Duo.
Despite running for only three seasons, the Batman TV series had a lasting cultural impact and contributed significantly to the popularisation of the Batman character beyond comic books, influencing numerous future adaptations of the DC Comics superhero.
The Villain's Lair
The Villain's Lair is based on the headquarters used by Batman's rogues gallery in the 1966 Batman film, which was a theatrical release connected to the TV series. In the film, the United Underworld was formed as a coalition of four of Batman's greatest enemies: the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and Catwoman.
Their secret headquarters was located in a waterfront location, accessible by submarine. The interior featured a blend of nautical elements with the personal touches of each villain - the Penguin's umbrellas, Catwoman's feline accessories (including her cat Hecate), the Riddler's puzzles, and the Joker's playing card motifs.
The lair served as the planning centre for their ultimate scheme to dehydrate the United World Organisation's Security Council and hold them for ransom. The set design was characteristic of the show's colourful, campy aesthetic with elaborate props and distinctively 1960s design elements.
This playset recreates that iconic location, allowing collectors to stage their own scenes with the villains plotting against the Dynamic Duo, complete with authentic details like Hecate the cat and the Penguin's umbrella collection.
