The show follows seven castaways stranded on an uncharted desert isle after their charter boat, the S.S. Minnow, is caught in a storm during what was meant to be a three-hour tour.

The series' now-iconic theme song, "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle," was written by Sherwood Schwartz specifically to explain the castaways' predicament to viewers without needing lengthy exposition, and it remains one of the most recognisable theme tunes in television history.

Its first season was filmed in black and white, with the remaining two seasons produced in colour. Across three seasons, the show ran for 98 episodes, following Gilligan, the Skipper, and their fellow castaways as they attempted — and consistently failed — to find their way home.
