Gilligan's Island is an American sitcom created and produced by Sherwood Schwartz that aired on CBS from 1964 to 1967. The show follows seven castaways stranded on an uncharted desert isle after their charter boat, the S.S. Minnow, is caught in a storm during what was meant to be a three-hour tour.

The series' now-iconic theme song, "The Ballad of Gilligan's Isle," was written by Sherwood Schwartz specifically to explain the castaways' predicament to viewers without needing lengthy exposition, and it remains one of the most recognisable theme tunes in television history.

Its first season was filmed in black and white, with the remaining two seasons produced in colour. Across three seasons, the show ran for 98 episodes, following Gilligan, the Skipper, and their fellow castaways as they attempted — and consistently failed — to find their way home.

Though cancelled after just three seasons, Gilligan's Island found an extraordinary second life in syndication, becoming one of the most frequently rerun television series of all time and cementing its status as a beloved piece of American pop culture.
