Barrel of Monkeys is a toy game released by Lakeside Toys in 1965. It was created by Leonard Marks and Milton Dinhofer in 1961, and in 1964, Herman Kesler partnered to sell it to Lakeside Toys.

Milton Bradley's editions consist of a toy barrel in either blue, yellow, red, purple, orange, gray or green. The barrel contains 12 monkeys in the original version, but modern versions typically contain 10 monkeys. The color of the monkeys usually corresponds to the barrel's color.

The game has remained largely unchanged since its introduction, demonstrating the timeless appeal of its simple yet challenging gameplay.

Time magazine ranked Barrel of Monkeys at No. 53 on their 2011 All-Time 100 Greatest Toys list, cementing its place in toy history.

Today, the game is produced by the Milton Bradley Company, which is now a division of the Hasbro Corporation, continuing to bring this classic gameplay experience to new generations.

Solo Play:

1. Dump the monkeys onto a flat surface.

2. Pick up one monkey by an arm.

3. Use that monkey to hook another monkey by its arm.

4. Continue linking monkeys together to form a chain.

5. Your turn ends when you drop a monkey.

6. Count how many monkeys you successfully linked and try to beat your score in the next round.

Competitive Play (2 or more players):

1. Players take turns following the same steps as solo play.

2. When a player drops a monkey, their turn ends and they score one point for each monkey they successfully linked.

3. The next player then takes their turn with the remaining monkeys.

4. Continue until all monkeys have been linked or dropped.

5. The player with the highest score wins.
