Eric Carle (1929-2021) was an acclaimed American designer, illustrator, and writer of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.

Born in Syracuse, New York, Carle moved with his parents to Germany when he was six years old. He was educated there and graduated from the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Stuttgart.

His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, was published in 1969 and has eaten its way into the hearts of millions of children all over the world. Carle illustrated more than seventy books, many best sellers, and more than 145 million copies of his books have sold around the world.

His signature artistic technique was created by hand-painting papers, which he then cut and layered to form bright and cheerful collages. The distinctive style and vibrant colors of his artwork have made his books instantly recognizable to generations of young readers.
