1970s Culture

+

The 1970s was a vibrant decade characterised by distinctive fashion, music, and cultural shifts that this special UNO edition brilliantly captures:

Disco Era: The 1970s saw the rise of disco music, with iconic artists like Donna Summer and the Bee Gees dominating the charts. Dance floors across the world came alive with the sounds of disco, and this UNO deck's groovy design perfectly reflects that energetic atmosphere.

Fashion Revolution: Bell-bottom jeans, platform shoes, and psychedelic patterns dominated 70s fashion. The muted colour scheme and beige background of this deck capture the earthy tones and natural materials that defined the decade's aesthetic.

Cultural Transformation: The era of social movements, environmental awareness, and the aftermath of the civil rights movement all contributed to a unique cultural landscape that's celebrated in this nostalgic UNO edition.

This deck serves as both a functional game and a collectible piece of 1970s design nostalgia, perfect for those who lived through the decade or appreciate its distinctive groovy aesthetic.

The UNO Decades Series

+

The UNO Decades Series is a special collection celebrating UNO's 50th anniversary with five distinct decks, each themed after a different decade from the 1970s through the 2010s:

1970s Edition: This first edition features groovy beige backgrounds and muted colours reminiscent of the disco era when UNO was first created in 1971.

1980s Edition: Features bright neon colours, metallic finishes, and designs inspired by early computer graphics and video games of the 1980s.

1990s Edition: Captures the colourful and bold aesthetic of the 1990s with designs that evoke memories of the grunge era and early internet age.

2000s Edition: Features designs inspired by the Y2K tech boom, early social media, and the digital revolution of the new millennium.

2010s Edition: The final deck in the series, representing the era of smartphones, social media, and digital influencers with bright colours and emoji-style graphics.

Each deck in the series maintains the classic UNO gameplay whilst offering a nostalgic visual journey through five decades of popular culture. Collectors can acquire all five decks to own a complete visual history of UNO's evolution alongside cultural trends.

UNO Game History

+

UNO was invented in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barber from Reading, Ohio. Robbins created the game to resolve a dispute about the rules of Crazy Eights and initially sold copies of UNO from his barbershop.

The game caught the attention of Robert Tezak over Thanksgiving weekend in 1971, who became hooked on it. The following year, Tezak made a deal with Robbins to take over UNO, and International Games was formed to produce and market the card game.

Following decades of massive success, International Games was acquired by Mattel in 1992, and UNO has remained a global phenomenon ever since. According to Mattel, approximately 17 decks are sold every minute worldwide.

Today, UNO is available in more than 80 countries and has expanded to include numerous themed editions, including this special 1970s edition that celebrates the decade when UNO was first created and disco culture flourished.

How To Play UNO

+

Setup: Each player is dealt 7 cards, and the remaining cards form a draw pile. The top card is turned over to start the discard pile.

Gameplay: Players take turns placing a card from their hand onto the discard pile. The card must match either the colour or the number/symbol of the card on top of the discard pile. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw a card from the draw pile.

Special Cards:

Skip Card: When played, the next person in line loses their turn.

Reverse Card: Reverses the direction of play.

Draw Two Card: Forces the next player to draw two cards and lose their turn.

Wild Card: Allows the player to choose any colour for the next player to match.

Wild Draw Four Card: Allows the player to choose any colour and forces the next player to draw four cards and lose their turn.

Winning: When a player has only one card left, they must yell "UNO!" If they don't and are caught, they must draw two cards. The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round.
