Game Setup:

1. Each player draws a card. The highest card deals.

2. The dealer gives each player 7 cards.

3. The remaining cards are placed face down to form a DRAW pile.

4. The top card of the DRAW pile is turned over to begin a DISCARD pile.

Gameplay:

1. The player to the left of the dealer goes first, then play passes to the left.

2. On your turn, you must match a card from your hand to the card on the top of the DISCARD pile, either by number, colour, or word.

3. If you can't match, you must draw a card from the DRAW pile. If you can play it, you may do so immediately. Otherwise, play moves to the next person.

Action Cards:

• Draw Two: The next player must draw 2 cards and lose their turn.

• Reverse: Reverses the direction of play.

• Skip: The next player loses their turn.

• Wild: Player chooses the colour that continues play.

• Wild Draw Four: Player chooses the colour that continues play, and the next player must draw 4 cards and lose their turn.

Winning:

When you have one card left, you must yell "UNO!" If you don't say "UNO" and another player catches you before the next player begins their turn, you must draw 2 cards.

The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round. Points are scored based on the cards left in opponents' hands.

UNO was created in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barber from Reading, Ohio. He invented the game while arguing with his son about the rules of Crazy Eights. Robbins believed he could create a better card game, and UNO was born.

Initially, Robbins and his family produced the first 5,000 UNO decks at home and sold them through his barber shop and local businesses. As demand grew, Robbins sold the rights to UNO to a group of friends for $50,000 plus royalties.

In 1992, International Games Inc., which owned UNO, was acquired by Mattel, which continues to produce and market UNO today. Since its creation, UNO has sold more than 150 million copies in over 80 countries worldwide.

The name "UNO" means "one" in Spanish and Italian, perfectly capturing the game's objective of being the first to get down to one card before going out. The simplicity of the game, combined with its engaging gameplay, has made it one of the most popular card games in history.
