Scalextric was invented by Fred Francis in the UK and first shown at the Harrogate Toy Fair in 1957, quickly becoming one of the world's best-known slot car brands. The name is a blend of "scale" and "electric".

For almost 70 years, Scalextric has brought the thrill of motor racing into homes, with detailed 1:32 scale cars and track sets loved by kids and collectors alike. Today the brand is owned by Hornby Hobbies Ltd.

This Australian exclusive set pays tribute to two local motoring icons: the Ford XY Falcon, built from 1970 to 1972, and the Holden VL Commodore, built from 1986 to 1988.

How Slot Cars Work:

Slot cars run on specially designed tracks with a slot and electrical contacts. Each car has a guide blade that sits in the slot and metal braids that pick up power from the strips running along it.

When you squeeze the hand controller, power flows through the track to the car's motor. The harder you squeeze, the faster the car goes.

Getting Started:

• Everything you need to race is in the box: track, 2 cars, 2 hand controllers, a powerbase and a transformer

• You will need a floor or table area of about 2.1 m x 1.4 m to set up the track

• Clean the track regularly to keep good electrical contact

• Keep the cars' braids and tyres clean for best performance
