History of Tickle Me Elmo
+
The Toy That Started a Craze: Tickle Me Elmo was invented by toy designers Ron Dubren and Greg Hyman, whose first concept was a giggling chimpanzee called “Tickles”. Tyco Preschool released Tickle Me Elmo in 1996, and after he was promoted on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, demand took off.
A Christmas Sensation: That Christmas, Tickle Me Elmo became one of the biggest toy crazes in history. Shelves were stripped bare, shoppers queued for hours, and some sellers resold Elmo for hundreds of dollars.
A Lasting Favourite: Elmo has been reinvented many times since, including the rolling “TMX” Elmo for the 10th anniversary in 2006. Today’s Tickle Me Elmo, with over 20 sounds and a soft, cuddly design, is a favourite with kids meeting him for the first time and with grown-ups who remember the original 1996 sensation.
