Strawberry Shortcake started as a greeting-card character in the early 1970s and became one of the most iconic scented doll lines of the 1980s.

Origins in greeting cards: The character began at American Greetings around 1972–73, when artist Barbi Sargent drew a freckled "Strawberry Girl" for a Valentine's card, wearing a bonnet with strawberry print. A positive response led American Greetings to develop her into a full character, complete with her pet cat Custard and a cast of fruit-themed friends.

First dolls and 1980s boom: Toy company Kenner licensed Strawberry Shortcake and released the first doll in 1979 – a soft rag-style doll with a vinyl head, red yarn curls, freckles and a strawberry-print bonnet. The big innovation was that each doll was scented to match her dessert or fruit name. From 1979 to about 1985, Kenner produced multiple lines of dolls, playsets and pets, helped by TV specials and worldwide merchandise.

1990s–2000s revivals: After the original line ended in the mid-80s, the property changed hands. A more substantial reboot arrived in 2003 with a new animated series and redesigned dolls, followed by another redesign around 2009 that gave her a more modern, fashion-oriented look.

Recent versions: In the 2010s and 2020s, further reimaginings have presented Strawberry Shortcake with refreshed outfits and updated doll bodies, whilst keeping core traits like red hair, freckles and berry scent. The brand today leans into nostalgia, with classic 1980s dolls collected by adults and new dolls balancing retro cues with current styles, so the character stays recognisable across generations.
