Slinky first appeared in 1945 when naval engineer Richard James accidentally knocked over a tension spring that "walked" down rather than simply falling. James and his wife Betty developed the toy and debuted it at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia during the 1945 Christmas season.
The original Slinky was made of blue-black Swedish steel, was 2.5 inches tall, and contained 98 coils. It became an instant sensation, with the entire inventory of 400 units selling out in just 90 minutes. To date, over 350 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide.
