Voltron: Defender of the Universe is an American animated television series that originally aired in syndication from September 10, 1984, to November 18, 1985. The series was adapted from two unrelated Japanese anime series: Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.

The series was produced by World Events Productions and distributed through King Features Entertainment. It became one of the top-rated syndicated children's shows during its original run and garnered a dedicated fan following that has remained strong for decades.

The first season, Lion Force Voltron, followed the adventures of five Space Explorers who, after being captured by the forces of evil King Zarkon, escape to the planet Arus where they discover the ancient robot warrior Voltron. When the five pilots operate their lion vehicles together, they form the mighty robot Voltron, Defender of the Universe.

The second season, Vehicle Force Voltron, featured a completely different story with new characters. Set in the future, it follows the Galaxy Alliance's exploration teams as they use their fleet of 15 vehicles to combat the evil Drule Empire. These vehicles can combine into a different version of Voltron to battle the Drule forces.

While not as popular as the Lion Force, both series are included in this complete collection, providing fans with the entire Voltron experience as it was presented to American audiences in the 1980s.

Lion Force:

• Keith: Commander of the Voltron Force and pilot of the Black Lion, which forms the head and torso of Voltron

• Lance: Second-in-command and pilot of the Red Lion, which forms the right arm of Voltron

• Pidge: The youngest member and pilot of the Green Lion, which forms the left arm of Voltron

• Princess Allura: Ruler of planet Arus and pilot of the Blue Lion, which forms the right leg of Voltron

• Hunk: The strongman of the team and pilot of the Yellow Lion, which forms the left leg of Voltron

• Sven: Original Blue Lion pilot who was injured and replaced by Princess Allura

• Coran: Princess Allura's royal advisor

• King Zarkon: Ruler of planet Doom and the main antagonist

• Prince Lotor: Zarkon's son who becomes obsessed with Princess Allura

• Haggar: An evil witch who creates Robeasts to fight Voltron

Vehicle Force:

• Commander Jeff: Leader of the Air Team and pilot of the Command Jet Explorer

• Chip: Pidge's twin brother and member of the Land Team

• Lisa: Member of the Sea Team

• Cliff: Leader of the Land Team

• Cric: Leader of the Sea Team

• Commander Hazar: Complex Drule leader who questions his empire's policies

"Fleet of Doom" is a special feature-length crossover episode that was produced specifically for the American market in 1986. This special is included in this complete series box set.

In this unique adventure, the two Voltron teams—Lion Force Voltron and Vehicle Force Voltron—join forces for the first and only time to battle a combined threat. King Zarkon and the Drule Empire unite their forces to create the "Fleet of Doom," requiring both Voltron teams to work together to save the universe.

This special holds particular significance for Voltron fans as it represents the only time in the original series that both versions of Voltron appear together and interact with each other. It serves as a bridge between the two separate storylines and provides closure for viewers who enjoyed both iterations of the show.

The special features all the main characters from both series and includes epic battles, dramatic rescues, and the spectacular sight of both Voltrons fighting side by side.

This rare special was not regularly included in syndication packages, making its inclusion in this complete series collection particularly valuable for collectors and fans.

Voltron has left an indelible mark on pop culture that continues to resonate decades after its original airing:

• Pioneering Anime Adaptation: One of the first successfully adapted Japanese anime series for American audiences, helping to pave the way for future imports

• Creative Influence: The concept of separate vehicles combining to form a super robot influenced numerous subsequent shows and toy lines

• Cultural References: Has been referenced in numerous shows, including "Robot Chicken," "South Park," and "Family Guy"
