The Slinky was invented by mechanical engineer Richard James in 1943 during an experiment with tension coils. James accidentally knocked a spring off his desk and watched in amazement as it "walked" down instead of falling.

After two years of development to find the perfect steel formulation and coil dimensions, James and his wife Betty introduced the Slinky at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia during the 1945 Christmas season. The entire inventory of 400 units sold out within 90 minutes.

Betty James, who named the toy Slinky (a Swedish word meaning traespiral or "sleek and sinuous"), took over the company in 1960 and led it to greater success. She insisted on keeping the price affordable and moved production to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

In 2000, the Slinky was officially inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, cementing its status as one of America's most beloved toys.

Since its debut, over 350 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular toys in history. The familiar "Slinky jingle" from its 1960s television commercials remains one of the most recognizable advertising tunes of all time.
